Picture a burglar. Not the one dressed in black, wearing a ski mask, and holding a flashlight...
The real thing is more likely to carry a clipboard or rake, and dress like a meter reader or a landscaper. If you don't answer the door, he'll check it anyway. If it's unlocked, he'll walk right in. If it is locked, he'll probably just look in your windows to spot a flat screen TV or gaming systems he'd like. Those could be worth breaking a window for, after all, that neighbor probably won't react to ONE loud sound, they usually wait for a second.
Alarm systems DO deter burglars, but only if they're activated. Thieves admit that a sticker alone is not convincing enough. Many are willing to take the risk that's it's not on. It's key to have blinds or shades drawn on ALL ground level windows, including the basement, when you're not home. It's riskier for that robber to enter into a space he can't see.
