There is a right and wrong way to ask for a raise...
Chances are – you could really use a raise. Corie Russell, from Office Ettiquette, has some dos and don’ts to improve your chances of getting one:
• Don’t argue that you NEED a raise. Do point out that you DESERVE a raise. Your company doesn’t really care what you pay for child care or car payments. Point out some ways you’ve helped them make or save money instead.
• Don’t mention your coworkers’ salaries – stick to your own strengths.
• Don’t threaten to quit. That just confirms your lack of commitment.
• Do keep a record of your accomplishments. When it comes time to discuss a raise – keep it short and sweet – and be prepared to back it up with some highlights from your accomplishment stash.
