Can an athlete’s bad behavior translate to a good investment?
Not any time soon. Joe Orlando, author of “Collecting Sports Legends,” says collecting memorabilia from controversial or disgraced athletes can pay off - but it will take a while.
An an 8x10-inch autographed photo of Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez used to go for $296. It's on sale now for $40. A jersey signed by Lance Armstrong was worth $2,000 at the height of his career. Now you can buy one on eBay for less than $300. Joe says the price of memorabilia drops by as much as 80% whenever superstars get caught up in scandals. That includes home run champion Barry Bonds, golfer Tiger Woods and former NFL great O.J. Simpson.
If you’re stuck with one of these, hang onto it, prices may recover over time, depending on the athlete - and the nature of the scandal. If it’s personal in nature, that collectible has a chance. For example, an authentic Tiger Woods autographed rookie card went from over $4,000 down to $1,700 - then bounced back up to $3,000.
