When the temperature drops, it’s a good idea to have an onion handy.
Cut it in half and rub that on your windows and windshield the night before - and you’ll prevent ice from forming on the glass. Here are some other cold-weather car tricks from Reader’s Digest:
* Windshield: A few rubber bath mats on your windshield can make peeling ice and snow off much easier.
* Interior: Inexpensive bath mats in the car can help with all that slush and grit that gets tracked in. Not on the driver’s side of course.
* Wiper blades: Rub each blade with full-strength rubbing alcohol and it will keep them from freezing or sticking to the glass. Don’t forget the rear blade.
* Side mirrors: A plastic baggy over each one at night will prevent them from icing up.
* Frozen car door lock: Try heating your key with a match or lighter to melt your way through. Another option is to take a regular drinking straw and blow directly onto the frozen lock. The heat from your breath should melt the ice.
* Foggy windshield: That can happen in an instant and cause a real hazard. If it does, open your windows a bit immediately. It’s also handy to keep a chalkboard eraser within for a quick swipe of visibility.
