This maddening mystery of missing socks in the laundry has finally been solved. According to Kate Seabrook, of LG appliances, in cases where both socks actually made it into the washer, the AWOL sock often gets trapped behind the drum or end up in the filter drawer.
Socks are prone to going rogue during the spin cycle, especially when the washer is overloaded, and often wind up being whipped into small gaps where they can slip between the tub and drum. From there, some may even work their way down and get sucked into drain pump. Unlucky socks stop there but some escapee socks find their way to freedom and make it all the way to the outside with the waste water.
