There is a right and wrong way to ask for a raise. Which word to avoid...

We need a raise!

If you’ll be asking for a raise any time soon – avoid using the word “I”.
Forbes Magazine has some negotiating skills that will increase your odds of an increase:

• Avoid “I” statements. Talk about what “we” need instead. It sounds less egotistical and more like a partnership.

• Be wise, not smart. Show some respect for the other party and avoid using power-posture or one-liners.

• Detach yourself. It may be difficult - but try not to take your review or salary adjustment personally, for better or worse. There are usually many factors at play in your pay.
