An old childhood disease is making a nasty comeback...

Whooping cough is on the rise again...

Experts say the latest outbreak may be the worst in 50 years. A vaccine against whooping cough was introduced in the 1940s and it was very effective. Cases dropped to less than 1 per 100,000 people. According to Thomas Frieden of the CDC, the new vaccine for whooping cough does not cause as many bad reactions as the old one did – but it doesn’t last as long either. That’s why we’re likely to see more cases this year than we have in decades.

If you or your children have not been vaccinated against whooping cough, talk to your doctor. The new vaccine still offers substantial protection, especially for children. It’s also very important that adults who are age 65 and older and in contact with infants get the vaccine.
