There’s dirt in your drink!

When you order a drink at a bar or restaurant, you expect the glass, ingredients and garnishes to be clean – but the ice in there might be filthy.

Random tests on ice at different establishments have turned up some disgusting cubes of frozen fungus and bacteria. Freezing stuff does not kill the cooties. Some restaurants don’t clean ice machines as often as necessary and that frozen filth can go right into your drink. Many health departments don’t thoroughly check ice machines. In most cases, a visual spot check is all they do.

If you still want ice in your drink – take a good look at it. If you can see any particles in there, skip it. Ask for another drink, without ice. The same can be true for your ice dispenser at home. If you don’t clean it thoroughly on a regular basis, the ice and water coming out of the dispenser could be filthy.
