Depression Don'ts

Depression can strike any person at any age, and sometimes we might say things to help that really don't. Here are a few statements to avoid:

Don't say: There's always someone worse off than you are. Do say: You're not alone in this, I'm here for you.

Don't say: Nobody ever said life was fair. Do say: You're important to me, I'd like to help.

Don't say: Try not to be so depressed, it's not so bad. Do say: There is hope, when this is over we'll both still be here.

Don't say: I know how you feel. Do say: I want to understand what you're feeling.
