At some point in your life, you were probably told not to shower or bathe during a storm. After all, lightening could strike and you'd get fried! So is there any truth to that?

Actually, yes. And that goes for washing dishes and doing laundry too. According to Ron Holle, a former NOAA meteorologist who tracks lightning injuries, about 10 to 20 people in the US are shocked annually while bathing, using faucets or handling appliances during storms. So the odds of being hurt or killed this way are really slim, but the bottom line is lightning CAN travel through plumbing and shock people.

And as far as swimming goes, lightening doesn't travel much more than 20 feet in a body of water, but you cannot predict where the strike will be, so get out of the water!
