Most gas stations have three octane options at the pump.
Most engines are designed to take regular gas, which is the 87 octane and the least expensive option. Don’t be fooled into thinking those fuel choices are good, better and best. If you’ve got a regular car, regular fuel will do. If you’ve got a high-performance car or a powerful engine, you should probably go with 91 octane or higher to reduce knocking and pinging. That will be the most expensive pump. If the middle pump is your default choice, you’re probably paying more or less than you should. Consider your vehicle and fill up accordingly.
