The next time you receive your mobile phone bill – take a close look at it to see if you’ve been crammed...
According to John Breyault of the National Consumers League, cramming is when a provider other than your phone company charges you for stuff you never even asked for. The cramming could be ringtones, sports scores, horoscopes or weather updates. If you go ahead and pay for that, your phone company keeps a portion of that rip-off revenue.
There are a few things you can do to prevent being crammed. Avoid calling “900” numbers or signing up for contests online via your cell phone. If you do get crammed, you’ll need to call your provider and demand a refund. AT&T, CenturyLink and Verizon have all already agreed to end most cramming, or third-party billing, by the end of this year.
