If posting your resume and all that personal information online rubs you the wrong way, it should. There is some risk involved. But there are ways for job seekers to protect themselves:
Check for a privacy policy. Make sure the job search site you're considering spells out how your information will be used and whether or not it will be shared.
Don't forget to delete. Keep track of where you post your resume, and once you've landed a job, go back and remove it. The longer your resume is posted on a job board, the more exposure you're getting.
Safeguard your identity. Consider replacing your name on your resume with a generic identifier such as "Confidential Candidate". You can do the same with the name and location of your current employer if you're trying to be discreet. Use an industry description instead of a company name.
Protect your references. If your resume has names and contact information for references, take them out. If you're keeping a low personal profile, you should do the same for your friends and colleagues. You can share that information after an employer has expressed an interest in you.
