Those Halloween pop-up stores are handy. How to scare up some savings...

Halloween pop-up stores are here again.

They’ve got everything you need for the ultimate Halloween costumes and decor but beware before you enter. Consumer Reports has the following tips to avoid getting burned:

1. Don't get carried away. They may have a wider selection but some of that same scary stuff costs less down the street in the Halloween aisle.

2. Ask about returns. Costumes and inflatables often are not returnable. Keep in mind that store may be gone in November.

3. Inspect the merchandise. That might not matter much with a $5 pair of Spock ears, but if you're spending $300 on a life-size animatronic werewolf, better take a close look before you buy.

4. Pay by credit card. If you didn't get what you paid for, you may be able to dispute the charge through your card company. Debit cards and cash give you less leverage.

Keep in mind that Halloween falls on a Thursday this year. If you’re party is the following weekend, wait until Friday the 1st to score some big savings.
