You may have guessed the term “mug shot” is derived from the slang word for face which is “mug” – and we have the British to thank for that. In 18th century England, it got popular to fashion beer mugs into ugly or grimacing faces. The pub slang for an unattractive person stuck and even works for attractive people - in an ugly situation.
