Cold, fear and awe. These three sensations have something in common - goosebumps.
Cold-induced goosebumps are a pretty straight-forward physical response. A sudden chill will cause the pores in the skin to tighten, in an attempt at keeping body heat in. Fear-induced goosebumps are more of an emotional response. Sudden stress releases adrenaline which causes the muscles in the skin to contract, preparing us for fight or flight. Awe-induced goosebumps or shivers are similar to those of fear. That overwhelming emotional response to a great speech, natural wonder, work of art or love is actually a form of stress and unleashes the adrenalin causing the skin to tingle.
