If your dentist has bad teeth, or your hairdresser has a hideous ‘do...
...you might wonder if they know what they’re doing. Well, according to Sara Bleich, at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, we should also wonder a little if our doctor is overweight. Her research found that overweight or obese doctors are less likely to initiate weight discussions with overweight or obese patients. A whopping 93% of the doctors she surveyed admitted they provided an obesity diagnosis ONLY to patients with a BMI the same or higher than their own.
Dr. Bleich says it’s important to take note if your doctor is chubby. If so, you may need to be a little more proactive about discussing your weight at appointments. It’s a good idea to calculate your own BMI before you go.
