We used to get flu shots in October and November, but that window has opened a lot.
Now that the pharmaceutical companies are making more vaccines, and getting them into the market earlier, you can go ahead and get your shot as soon as it's available. September is fine, October at the latest. Don't worry, it won't wear off. Immunity from a flu shot now will extend through the flu season into the spring, and sometimes even longer.
Also, little children need two doses of the vaccine in their first year of getting it, and should really get started as soon as possible.
